# Ugly birds shaped by feeding and selective breeding

Bird appearance can reflect wild ecology or human choice. A condor's bare head supports clean feeding at carcasses, while the Dong Tao chicken's heavy legs are a domestic breed trait.

## What connects them

A bare head can look unhealthy when judged against a feathered songbird, but it is common among birds that feed inside large carcasses. Less feathering around the head and neck leaves fewer surfaces for decaying material to cling to and makes cleaning easier.

The Dong Tao chicken represents a different process. Its unusually thick, scaly legs were shaped through selective breeding rather than the same wild environmental pressures that shaped the condor.

Placing the two together shows why appearance needs context. Similar human reactions can be caused by natural selection, sexual selection, domestication, health, age or simple unfamiliarity. The cause must be identified before the feature is explained.

## 2 unusual birds

- **California condor** (*Gymnogyps californianus*): A bare head is easier to keep clean when the bird feeds inside large carcasses. [Read profile](https://uglyanimals.net/animals/california-condor/)
- **Dong Tao chicken** (*Gallus gallus domesticus*): Its remarkably thick legs are a domestic breed trait shaped by selective breeding. [Read profile](https://uglyanimals.net/animals/dong-tao-chicken/)

## Appearance and function

- **Bare head and neck:** Reduce feather contamination while scavenging. Examples: California condor.
- **Large hooked bill:** Tear flesh from carcasses. Examples: California condor.
- **Exceptionally thick legs:** Domestic breed characteristic maintained by selection. Examples: Dong Tao chicken.
- **Heavy scales:** Part of the breed's enlarged leg structure. Examples: Dong Tao chicken.
